Have you ever argued with someone who is seriously good at debating? I have. It sucks.
You’re constantly thrown off-balance, responding to a point you didn’t expect to. You find yourself defending the weak edges of your argument, while the main thrust gets left behind in the back-and-forth, and you end up losing momentum, confidence, and ultimately, the argument.
One of my close friends won international debate competitions for fun while we were at university (he’s now a successful criminal barrister), and he told me that the only trick in the book, once you boil it all down, is to make sure the conversation is framed in your terms. Once that happens, it’s all over bar the shouting.

I didn't start running until I was in my late twenties, and even so I would end up in a pattern where I'd get motivated and go on a couple of runs, take a few days off, go on another run the following week, and next thing you know it's been a month since I last run. Rinse and repeat.

My goal was to build a culture that set aggressive deadlines, but also was okay with sometimes missing dates. If there's no date, it might take 3 months. But if you set a date of 2 weeks and it actually takes 1 month, great, you just shipped a first version 3x faster.
It's one of my favorite parts about roles like DX and Design Engineers. These are folks who can code, design, build, and ship. They have extreme agency and operate more like founders.
